in for the president in romney's debate preps, the silver haired guy in the pink shirt is ohio senator rob portman. and, in fact, portman has really become the go-to guy for republican candidates who need a sparg partner. he's really good at this. but here's the thing, he's never really talked publicly about his role, the preparation and how his debate preps have gone. until now. because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mccain, that cindy mccain got very upset and ran crying out of the room. i talked to rob portman about that, he told me tha

preparation for the presidential debate, president obama and mitt romney are going to see the first one right here on wednesday. that debate is coming. and you're going to see where they are in the process of preparing in just a moment. the debates and the election, of course, are serious. and that would be our first story. serious. until we discovered this video, stunning video shot from the helmet of a u.s. soldier, it seems like a video game. but this is not xbox which you're about to see. it is real. the pentagon is telling us it happened, it happened in afghanistan in april. afghanistan is a place we have not heard these candidates talk about much, have we? nothing from romney during the republican convention, very little from obama, especially at the u.n. this last week. the debates will likely be a different story because this weekend the death toll for americans in the war surpassed the 2000 mark. the soldier who made the helmet cam video suffered only minor wounds and has returned to duty. but it's amazing that he suffered only minor wounds when you see this incredible story. his fig

. and the debates certainly played a big factor. three one-on-one debates between romney and o'brien. and romney was considered to win at least two of those debates. >> let me ask you about the performance in the debates. as i recall and also from reading there uh your article, his challenger at the time did something foolish in a debate, attempted humor without knowing the outcome. that's something none of us should ever do. and she really fell flat. and at the time, that was something that a lot of people said was a superb moment for mitt romney. and now we're hearing he's practicing zingers. wouldn't you think he would've learned from the failures of his challenger? >> yeah. i think he can benefit in two different ways. one is by coming across as a good alternative as somebody who people want to go to. the other way is for his opponent to have some faltering moment in a high-profile debate. days before the election, tim russert was moderating, the whole state was tuning in, it was a big deal and, you know, her joke that she made about having a tattoo with tim russert, you know, kind of fell f

is getting a lot of traction from the debate that governor romney prepared to let wall street run wild, but bring down the hammer on sesame street. maybe funny, maybe not. but everybody grabs everything they can when a nugget comes out and when the nugget came out this morning about jobs, you can bet your bottom dollar that both parties are jumping in and jumping in deep. jessica yellin joining me live now from washington, d.c. so, jessica, you and i both know that the administration gets a look-see, an early peek at the bureau of labor statistics numbers before the rest of us get to see them. how much of a jump do they get and how much are they able to craft what they need to craft going forward to turn that message into a speech like we just saw? >> well, the head of the council of economic advisers typically is notified the night before they come out. it would have been last night and can inform the president thursday night about the jobs numbers. so, you know, that's the window there. i would point out that, you know this is one of those situations where it is important for the whi
